JORDAN CRANE: OVERTURNED & BURNED

at Secret Headquarters

Friday October 27th, 2006

Secret Headquarters is pleased to announce our art opening with JORDAN CRANE.

Winner of numerous awards in the design and comic industries, Jordan Crane first emerged in the comic world in 1996 with the anthology NON. Crane edited, contributed to, and published Non, which has become known as that era’s showcase for the most explosive young experimental cartoonists. The short lived series has been compared to Spiegelman and Mouly’s Raw.

Crane’s first self published comic novella, The Last Lonely Saturday (now published by Fantagraphics), is noted for well observed narratives that focus on the vulnerability and mystery of the human experience. Crane’s work simultaneously has the feel of humble handcrafted objects made in the garage of a lonely teenager, and the sophisticated work of an artist at the height of his form.

Crane’s most recent book, The Clouds Above has been called a cross between Where the Wild Things Are and The Wizard of Oz. Clouds has earned an Ignatz award nomination for Outstanding Graphic Novel and Outstanding Artist.

Jordan also designed Fantagraphics’s, Mome, a quarterly anthology of comics by up-and-coming cartoonists

Crane is currently working on a quarterly comic book called Uptight where he will present new short stories and serialize Keeping Two, his sprawling, epic meditation on family, death, and the imagination.

Jordan Crane will attend the opening from 8pm to 10pm.

Secret Headquarters will feature Crane’s one of a kind original works of art through November 26th, 2006.

Located in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, California Secret Headquarters offers a sophisticated take on the traditional comic book store. Specializing in comic book culture, Secret Headquarters features the best in graphic novels, trade paperbacks and monthly titles.

A DANGEROUS MAN release party Sunday Sep 24th 2006!

September 24, 2006 Secret Headquarters
adangerousman.jpg

A few words from Mr. Huston -

I write pulp. I write noir. Open one of my books and you'll see I'm not lying. I write about people killing each other and suffering or not suffering the consequences. I write about the halt and the lame and the addicted.

A new book being released is not just a good excuse to whore oneself, it’s also a great time for a party. And nothing says party like a comic book shop!
So let's do it, let’s party in a comic shop!
Just no wiping up your vomit with those vintage copies of “Archie”.

The A DANGEROUS MAN release party will be thus and so:
Date/Time: Sunday September, 24th at 6:30 pm
Location: The Secret Headquarters
Event Details: Beer, and a reading by the writer, followed by the sale of books and the signing of same, followed by a brief stroll to a nearby booze dispensary where one may imbibe without fear of ruining valuable back issues of “Skyscrapers of the Midwest”

Join us!
- Charlie

By the way - Chuck here is writing Marvel Comic's MOON KNIGHT. Issue number #5 is out now!

CRASH and BURN

The Art of JOHNNY RYAN
At Secret Headquarters
Friday September 15th, 2006
Secret Headquarters is pleased to announce our art opening with JOHNNY RYAN.

Johnny first developed his hilarious drawings in the self-published title Angry Youth Comix. Now published by Fantagraphics Books, Ryan’s AYC has become the international bastion of lowbrow humor cartooning. Ryan’s utterly unpretentious taboo-tackling is an infectious bombardment of political incorrectness.

Johnny's unmistakable and humorous drawings have appeared in MAD, LA Weekly, National Geographic Kids, Hustler, Vice Magazine, Cool & Strange Music, The Stranger, and elsewhere. His artwork appears in nearly every issue of Nickelodeon magazine, wherein he has also collaborated with acclaimed artist Dave Cooper under the pen name "Hector Mumbly". The two also collaborated on a "Wonder Woman vs. Super Girl" story for the DC Comics anthology Bizarro. Ryan has also collaborated with Peter Bagge in both AYC and Bagge's Hate Annual, in addition to penciling and inking two stories for his DC series Sweatshop. In addition Johnny has done work for clients such as Nobleworks greetings cards, Rhino Records, and FOX television.

Ryan’s work has earned multiple Ignatz, Harvey , and Eisner award nominations as well as a spot on Rolling Stone’s 2005 Hot List.

Johnny Ryan will attend the opening from 8pm to 10pm. Secret Headquarters will feature Ryan's one of a kind original works of art through October 15th, 2006.
