Magic Fun Shop

by Adam Wallacavage

Photographs taken at Magic Fun Shop, Philadelphia, PA between 1995 - 2005.
Design by Clark Allen

Magic Fun Shop collects Adam Wallacavage's photographs made between 1995 and 2005, which provide an indescribable journey inside Philadelphia’s mysterious Magic Fun Shop. The book introduces us to Ed 'Doc' Turner, a hoarder of magic tricks, halloween masks and novelties. Doc maintained his dungeon of boxes, occult supplies, and melting latex for well over 50 years. Aware of the incredible and shocking collection of mystifying curiosities, Wallacavage captures the dusty, idiosyncratic history of Magic Fun Shop with unnerving detail. Each image is a step into a long shuttered world of strange wonders and long forgotten oddities.

Adam Wallacavage is an American artist renowned for his surreal and highly ornate octopus chandeliers. Wallacavage's chandeliers have been showcased in galleries worldwide, including São Paulo, Rome, London, Miami, Los Angeles, Vienna, and New York. Beyond his sculptural work, Wallacavage is also an accomplished photographer with images appearing in Thrasher, Transworld Skateboarding and Slap. His first book, Monster Size Monsters, published by Gingko Press in 2006, documents fifteen years of his photographic work. Magic Fun Shop is his first publication with Secret Headquarters and Apologies Press.

A Farewell From Jules

February 27, 2025 Secret Headquarters

tl;dr: So long and thanks for all the fish!

I started working at SHQ as a 24 year old girl, and I'm leaving a 38 year old dude. Life is wild.

This job has been my dream come true. I've met incredible people and lifelong friends in customers, creators, and coworkers alike. I've watched toddlers who came in with their parents every weekend go off to college and become artists in their own right. I've gotten to raise funds and gather supplies for groups near and dear to my heart like Access Reproductive Justice, Trans Defense Fund LA, Mutual Aid LA, 826LA, LAUSD Homeless Education Office, and more. I've read so, so many amazing comics.

My last day working at SHQ is March 21. Swing by, say hi, I'd love to see you. Catch me thereafter picking up my pull list on Wednesdays (and grabbing a chocolate chip cookie at Proof.)

Be brave, be kind, support your local shop.

SHQ Holiday Recs Part Four: Patrick Picks

December 15, 2024 Secret Headquarters

Night Librarian by Christopher Lincoln
Penguin Random House
$14
I wish I had a book like this when I was a kid. A fantastic tale of two siblings with absentee parents getting involved in a literary adventure. Plenty of classic stories come to life in this overnight experience. If your kid loves books, pick this one up.

In Perpetuity by Maria Hoey and Peter Hoey
Top Shelf
$20
The afterlife is just like the Greeks imagined, except it's also like LA. There's still traffic, but at least there is no honking. If you manage to find contentment in the afterlife, be wary of people from your past who show up wanting to contact the land of the living.

One Hand & The Six Fingers by Ram V/Dan Watters/Laurence Campbell/Sumit Kumar
Image Comics
$20
I am a sucker for a great detective story, and this one is unique in the comic book space. Neo-noir comes alive as we join Ari Nasser, on the verge of retirement of course, as he follows the trail of a copycat of a killer he put away years ago. The shifting perspective of this story will make you feel like you understand what's going on, but there is so much to discover. Originally released as two intertwining series, this volume combines them both in the correct reading order.

In Utero by Chris Gooch
Top Shelf
$25
The publisher described this as "Annihilation meets Evangelion", and I didn't need to hear another word. The world this story inhabits feels both rich and desolate. Starting summer camp in an abandoned mall, Hailey meets a new friend named Jen with a monstrous secret. The world doesn't exactly see Jen as the kind of girl that Hailey comes to know, but Jen's secret just might save everyone.

Mary Tyler Moorehawk by Dave Baker
Top Shelf
$30
If you miss The Venture Bros and Sir Terry Pratchett, this book is for you. As the daughter of a famous scientist, Mary and her cyborg brother Cutie Boy are no strangers to dangerous situations, but now they are facing the most dangerous one yet. I hope you are not sick of the multiverse because this book will bring you to the borders of our own reality and threaten to dismantle everything you hold dear.
