SHQ Holiday Recs Part One: Jules Picks

December 8, 2024 Secret Headquarters

The Deep Dark by Molly Knox Ostertag
Scholastic
$17
This book made me cry! Three times! Molly Knox Ostertag (Witch Boy, Girl From The Shore) does it again with this beautiful YA horror fantasy.
A relatable story of being young, encumbered with adult responsibilities and familial obligations, and trying to figure it all out.

Ash's Cabin by Jen Wang
First Second
$18
As a trans masculine person obsessed with survival shows like Alone, this book hit hard for me! Similarly to Deep Dark, Ash's Cabin is a YA adventure about finding your place in the world and learning that there is strength in asking for help.

Ultimate Spider-Man Volume One by Jonathan Hickman
Marvel Comics
$20
The first monthly Spidey book I've read in ages and much better than it has any right to be.
Peter Parker is your basic middle aged dad on Earth-6160 until a mysterious stranger from the future offers him a choice (and a mutated spider...)
Super fun alternate history Spider-Man!

Tokyo These Days by Taiyō Matsumoto
Viz Media
$28 each (3 volume series)
A perfect series about art, aging, comics, creation, legacy, and friendship.
It took me a while to get through the whole thing, because I kept stopping to take photos of the gorgeous panels. Matsumoto is a master, THE master imho.

Mothballs by Sole Otero
Fantagraphics
$30
Poppy, bright, unique art highlights this moving story of generational trauma and familial resentment & misunderstanding. If you, like me, love stories about family throughout generations, this is a must read.

 Bonus, Coming Soon...
War On Gaza by Joe Sacco
Fantagraphics
$13
Among the best serialized comics from 2024 and one of the most important releases of the year. Gut wrenching commentary and observations by a man who has been writing about Palestine for decades.Out December 17, just in time to start lots of interesting and important discussions when you're home for the holidays.

Stay tuned for next time... Dave's picks!

SHQ Crew Corner - October 2024

October 16, 2024 Secret Headquarters

Whatcha reading?: We have so many incredible books from SWANA creators right now (I wish I had big enough hands to hold them all up!) It’s more important than ever to be reading books from marginalized voices, especially if they challenge our Western, White Supremacist worldviews.

Get Your Tissues Ready: Okay you might not cry unless you’re a big ol’ queer that has feelings about the closet and compulsory heterosexuality BUT this acapella version of Chappell Roan’s Good Luck, Babe! is beyond gorgeous.

New TV Obsession: A fun, addictive, borderline silly network procedural! If you like quirky investigators like Monk, Veronica Mars, House, etc, then this is worth watching.

Bagel Lowdown: I am a bagel purist. Los Angeles is full of what food journalist Joe Rosenthal calls “hole-poked drek” (aka circle shaped bread that bougie people call bagels but aren’t actually bagels.) These are the current best bagels in Los Angeles:
Bagel Broker, Maury’s, and Saint Raf.
This is a correct list and I will not be taking questions.

10/12 Natalie Andrewson Book Release Party

September 16, 2024 Secret Headquarters

We are so excited to welcome friend and neighbor Natalie Andrewson to celebrate the release of their new book on Saturday October 12, 1-3p! Over 158 pages, Dreaming in Color is split into different sections, covering her early risograph works, monthly patreon print series, a large section on fantasy art, and an "how-to" section on risograph printing where Natalie shares some of her methods and dives into how the printing works. Dreaming in Color is the definitive way to get to see Natalie's artwork all in one place, and it's also great as reference material for anyone interested in risograph printing as well.

Want to come in person? Order your copy HERE!!

Can't make it on the day? Order here for a signed copy to be held or shipped for you after the event.
